How To Deal With Distractions?

Bored Student in HeadphonesHow do you deal with distractions?

Because let’s face it, distractions are everywhere. And despite the fact that you’re a busy person, they tend to be persistent in getting your attention.

Which doesn’t bode well for your blog and other online ventures.

So let me ask you again; how do you deal with them?

Well, if you have no idea and actually having trouble staying focused, here are some simple tips you can use fight distractions and stay on the right path.

1. Give in.

I know what you’re thinking. Why am I even suggesting such a ridiculous idea to you in the first place?

Well, let’s be honest. Distractions don’t always go away. And these little buggers will keep on tempting you unless you deal with them head-on.

And that’s exactly what you need to do. Give the current distraction the attention it’s been looking for.

Of course it doesn’t mean that you will have to spend an hour on it. Just a 5 to 10 minute attention will do. You still need to get back to work, after all.

2. Use the distraction as a reward.

Maybe you’ve been working for hours and you haven’t realized the time. When was the last time you took a break?

Maybe yesterday? Well, that’s where distractions come in. Whether you’re simply catching up on your Facebook or Twitter account, or reading a couple pages on the book you started last night – don’t hesitate to take a break and give into the temptation for at least a couple minutes.

No need to beat yourself over it. You earned it, workaholic.

3. List your distractions.

Keep a notepad handy and write down anything you think about that needs to be done or handled later – be it going grocery shopping, cleaning the house or simply catching up with friends.

Make sure to have a reminder list so you will be able to  focus on the current task without being afraid of forgetting something.

4. Track your distractions.

How many distractions have you entertained today? Keep in mind the task that you need to finish.

Maybe you’ve been paying more than enough attention to distractions. That shouldn’t be the case. Otherwise you’re outright procrastinating and being less productive.

So what you need to do is track your distractions so as to be aware if you’re already wasting time. This way, you’ll be able to stay on task and finish it on time.
